The night for Sam Mtukudzi

NORTON – “I miss my son. I need to dedicate time to him. I want to perform for him…talk to him again through music. I don’t know if that can cure myself of the loss of my boy but my heart tells me I must do something for Sam,” Tuku said this morning as he revealed he had set aside the night of Wednesday 29th September 2010 as a remembrance night for the departed younger Mtukudzi.

Tuku said a commemorative musical show will be held under the banner Wednesday To Remember Sam. The venue is Pakare Paye Arts Centre here, the home of arts development that gave birth and nurtured Sam, who was without a doubt, one of the most brilliant artists of his generation.

I miss my son...I need to dedicate time to him. Tuku and son Sam.

Wednesday night is less hectic and most appropriate for a commemorative musical evening, Tuku said.

Sam (22) died tragically in the early hours of Monday March 15 2010 when his car rammed into a bridge just outside Harare along the Bulawayo highway while driving home to Norton. He was travelling with his childhood friend Owen Chimhare who also died in the same accident. Owen worked with Sam in the AY Band as sound engineer.

“I am saying to Sam’s fans and friends here is a night that we are dedicating to the memory of Sam. Come let us remember him with music and dance. Sam enjoyed huge support from fans and friends who will keep his music alive,” Tuku said.

Tuku said he had no particular structure for his own performance on the night but would go by the mood of the evening.

Ay Band, with whom Sam performed and recorded, will play including Munya Mataruse who grew up with Sam as teenagers at the centre. As we release this information more artists are yet to be included on the line-up and will be announced in due course.

Because the show is commemorative Pakare Paye Arts Centre has kept admission at a modest $5 per head to enable many of the fans of Sam’s to attend.

Refreshments, snacks and full dinner will be available from our restaurant at the centre at Daisy’s Kitchen.

Come and join us to remember the fine young man who lived music to the end – a multi-skilled musician who composed, arranged, produced, played the guitar, saxophone, marimba and drums with so much perfection and ease his was purely God given talent.

In 2007 Sam released his debut album Rume Rimwe. Before he died he had just recorded his second album Cheziya, a 10-track CD now set to be posthumously published widely pretty soon.
