NORTON – The sensational Golden Girls who backed Tuku in the Black Spirits Band, over 30 years ago, reunite again for another rare public performance in memory of Sam Mtukudzi. The performance by the Golden Girls with Tuku, at Pakare Paye Arts Centre on Wednesday 29 th September, during the commemorative Wednesday To Remember Sam concert becomes only the second show for the Girls with Oliver since they parted three decades ago.
^ The sensational Golden Girls join Tuku for Sam's tribute show. Earlier this year the Golden Girls went on stage, for their first reunion show with Tuku in Harare, where their vintage performance was overwhelmingly received by both the older fans of Tuku’s and the born-frees who missed the Girls in their heyday. The born-frees is an expression coined for the generation born after Zimbabwe’s independence from Britain in 1980. The Girls lineup, all four of them, are now in their late 50s to early 60s. They have rehearsed with Tuku, sharpening the golden melodies that made them household names in the early 1980s. Tuku, who turned 58 on Wednesday, cancelled all birthday celebration shows traditionally held around his birthday, during the week of 22 September, in respect of the passing on of his son Sam in March this year. Tuku said he would not celebrate his birthday in the same year of his son’s death. Instead Tuku said he would host a commemorative show with friends and Sam’s group Ay Band in memory of the younger Mtukudzi, who died in a car accident in March, along Bulawayo road, just outside Harare. Tuku will also perform with his current Black Spirits Band. – Shepherd Mutamba / tukumusik.com |
