Tuku, sculptors collaborate

NORTON -Tuku is diversifying his collaborative work across art forms when he teams up with stone sculptors in a unique business alliance that promotes co-operation amongst artists themselves.

Tuku has chosen the tranquil farming environs of the Henry Munyaradzi Farm (Springstone Trust) in Ruwa where he performs solo and is joined later by his daughter Selmar on Sunday 15 May afternoon.

Above: Tuku and sculptor Dominic Benhura dwarfed by the Nzou neMhuru pieces.

The late Henry Munyaradzi was an elder respected in Zimbabwe’s fraternity of sculptors and beyond. It is befitting that Tuku pays homage to a fellow legend by co-operating with the numerous sculptors who now utilize a section of the farm as an arts centre.

Behind Tuku’s indomitable voice and the contagious ring of his acoustic guitar is a very exciting concept at the back of Sunday’s show.

Tuku is not pocketing the money raised from gate-takings. Whatever is earned from the box-office stays with the sculptors.

Tuku will choose pieces whose cost is equivalent to the revenue from the ticket sales for his sculpture park at Pakare Paye Arts Centre in Norton.

We can officially reveal that Tuku is entirely crazy about sculptures and is creating a sculpture garden at Pakare Paye.

Already there are collections of stone, metal and steel sculptures some hanging even from the office walls but not from the ceiling as yet. In fact Tuku has an imposing metal sculpture of himself that greets visitors to the Centre.

As much as there is music everywhere at Tuku’s head office there are sculptures in abundance too.

Several pieces adorn his office foyer and gardens among them the Nzou neMhuru elephant sculptures made by renowned sculptor Dominic Benhura. It required the assistance of a heavy duty crane to help mount the life size pieces.

With a good turn out and support of Tuku fans and Pakare Paye we are sure we will be able to leave Springstone with quite a good number of sculptures. The concept is a noble business deal but more of a fund raiser that promotes artist-to-artist collaboration.

Directions to the venue: About 1,5km from Ruwa Supermarket (along the Harare-Mutare road) before the golf club turn right into a gravel road and drive for 3km to Springstone.
The show starts at 2pm.
